Performance & Protest Now

[singlepic id=103 h=250 float=right]

The direct action tactics of the suffragettes continue to inspire other protesters in their activism. Climate Rush supporters glued themselves to a statue in the Houses of Parliament, the site where a suffragette had chained herself in 1909, wearing red suffragette-style sashes to draw attention to the cause of action on climate change. Their web site declare their inspiration by the suffragettes: ‘Climate Rush is inspired by the actions of the Suffragettes 100 years ago, who showed that peaceful civil disobedience could inspire positive change. We are a diverse group of women and men who are determined to raise awareness of the biggest threat facing humanity today – that of Climate Change.’

Their web site clearly declares their inspiration by the suffrage movement, including a Timeline of suffrage activities, links to the song ‘Sister Suffragette’ from the film Mary Poppins[singlepic id=104 h=150 float=right]and Women’s Environmental Network, underlining links between feminism and environmentalism.
