From The Women’s Library: Breaking Barriers’ touring display and events ‘Breaking Barriers’ is a small exhibition touring Essex between June 2009 and June 2010. Organised by Parliamentary Outreach, the exhibition explores the lives of local suffragists and suffragettes, and how their stories are relevant to modern audiences. The exhibition was developed in partnership with The Women’s Library as well as Essex County Council, Rethink, Epping Forest Museum and Southend Discovery Museum.

10^th January Saturday 11am-2pm “Votes for Women” edited by Susan Croft was launched at the Orange Tree Theatre at a celebration of the work of the Actresses’ Franchise League-playreadings, monologues and talks by leading actors and academics on the theme of the battle for the vote.

 

4^th July Saturday: Westminster’s Women of America-walking tour focusing on American women from all walks of life who left their mark on London.

 

8th July Wednesday- Breaking the Barriers exhibition on suffragette period in relation to modern Britain held at Southend Discovery Museum. Touring Essex until June 2010 (link to news/events page with new dates for exhibition) Time: 7.00 pm – 8.15 pm-organised by Parliamentary Outreach with Womens’ Library and other groups.

 

Monday 20^th July Protest against Miss England: 6:30pm at the Hilton, 225 Edgeware Road. Called by Mind the Gap: London Student Feminists.

Speakers included Judith Orr (author of “Sexism and the System”, Alex Callinicos (author and professor from Kings College), Liv Bailey-NUS Women’s Officer

 

1^st August 10pm till late-Mother Mae I! The Riot Showgirls hosted an evening of London cabaret talent-there were songs, sketches and party games at the fundraising event for Scary Girls Productions. All proceeds went to the ”We hurt for a yurt” appeal.

Throughout August- Between the Covers: Women’s Magazines and their readers– free exhibition at Womens’ library-charted the evolution of womens’ magazines from the 17^th Century to the present day. Showcasing influential and innovative titles and telling the stories behind their success.
