Bertha Newcome
ARTIST AND SUFFRAGIST, BERTHA NEWCOMBE – 1 CHEYNE WALK, CHELSEA
Bertha Newcombe was a member of the committee of the Artists’ Suffrage League and a friend of Christina Herringham. She painted “Emily Davies and Elisabeth Garrett presenting the first Women’s Suffrage petition to J.S. Mill in 1866”. Her aim in producing this picture was to try to counteract the many satirical portrayals of suffragettes that were common at that time.
In 1913 she was a member of the Executive Committee of the London Society for Women’s Suffrage. She invested in the Shoreditch Housing Association, the Women’s Pioneer Housing Association.
